A bit of miscommunication
The experience with Conroys was good and bad. There was miscommunication between Janelle Maybury and Claire Alder, who ended up telling me that the person dropping my cabinet off had decided not to go ahead. This was completely untrue, and I had to find out what the story was and feeling panicked that the furniture would not get dropped off to Conroys in Melbourne. The person dropping the cabinet off actually had to ring them back and complain to them about their treatment of me, and their miscommunication.
Once the cabinet got dropped off to Conroys in Melbourne, then Lynn Douglas was awesome. I got emails informing me of all info, and where the cabinet was each step of the way, and that it had cleared customs and fumigation etc. Very communicative and informative and helpful. I appreciate that a lot.
I only use Conroys for my transport of furniture, and usually find them good. This particular experience was good and bad, but I would still use them.

Shipped my car and household effects together in one container from Melbourne to Wellington on board “Spirit of Shanghai”. The car came out of its container in the same good condition it was loaded. I do not yet know condition of household effects as Conroys are at my request holding these in storage for two months. However I’m happy to say the Conroys excel in two important aspects of business - staff selection, and effective communications. Their staff on both sides of the Ditch were at all times courteous, welcoming, and helpful. Janelle in Melbourne and Peter in Wellington deserve mention. Peter used his personal car to ferry me back from one of several inspections my vehicle had to undergo. Emails were received outlining the various stages in the shipping process as they occurred.
Just one small mystery remains: the “Spirit of Shanghai” appears not to have motored into Wellington. How then did my cargo arrive? Transhipped? By land? Or by sea? The more handling, the more the risk of damage. We shall see.
"room for improvement"
While my experience with Conroy was fine, there is definately room for improvement. There were little annoyances all the way through the process. For example, I first got a quote from a salesperson, but when I engaged Conroy to do our move, the final quote was much higher (due to living in apartment building). On the actual day of the move, I had told Conroy agents multiple times that they couldn't arrive before 9 am as advised by our building manager. I was assured this was fine, only to have the movers arrive at 8 am! A third annoyance is that every aspect of the move is handled by a different person, and you have to keep telling them what you wanted. Our belongings were being put into storage, as had been advised right from the beginning but I was contacted once they arrived in the country to organise delivery.
"not very impressed"
Our furniture was a week late leaving we were told the 1st August and it left the 8th we had to borrow the money to pay for this before we left. I was told it would leave the 1sr and we would receive it no later than the 18th. It didn't arrive tithe 17th and it was only because I kept emailing and phone calls that we got it on the 24th otherwise it wouldn't havbeen before the 31st.
We weren't given any explanation as to why it was a week late leaving.
So not very impressed. If it had been any later my partner would have dealt with it and demanded a refund.
Not much fun sleeping on an airbed for 5 weeks.
Delivery Delay
This is the second time I have used Conroys to move the first time everything was great no problems, this time however not so good, my belongings were not loaded on the boat and left in the container so I had to wait longer for my belongings, I was informed off this with an email but no apology for what happened.

"Great Company, Great People!"
Fantastic service from the first phone call with Janelle and the first and on-going communication and advice with Justin. Both very helpful and patient!!The "removal guys" The packing was fast, efficient and of a high standard. The proof was in the delivery to the Property in NZ and the un-packing!No damage!!!There is often, a "huge amount of stress" for the Owner of the goods, as a lot of furniture etc will have "sentimental and heirloom value".Thank you all so much! Great Company, Great People!
Really Good Experience
I had a really good experience with the moveing. The contact people were very helpfull with all my questions and with timing the shipping. The movers packed my things very efficient and fast and the delivery team was also very efficient.
"took care of every item"
What a great experience with Conroy. From the consultant to people who unloaded the container, are all very professional & considerable. I'm so pleased that they took care of every item. I'll be using them again for sure in the future. 5 stars!!

Satisfied Overall
Hi, When picking up my vehicle at Conroys Auckland depot the Mercedes Benz hood emblem has snapped off. It's no major problem as I have replaced it. Overall very satisfied with Conroys.
Please note my response relates to our particular situation regarding Duty and Tax paid in the UK.
The quality of the Australian collection, packaging and UK delivery services were very good. I would note that our first collection courier in Sydney did not arrive at the time agreed, as Conroys used a local sub-contractor who 'went AWOL' during the day and did not arrive as required. A replacement collection was quickly arranged so I have no issues over all with this side of the service.
However, in our position as Australians who were already UK residents, we were not able to claim a Duty or VAT exemption and were charged taxes equivalent to 33% of the total depreciated value of the goods shipped. If we had known this prior to departure, I would not have arranged the expensive shipping and had to pay the subsequent tax.
When arranging the quote for the shipping, we were provide the UK government website which stated that as we have not lived in Australia for the 12months prior to our shipping to the UK, we would not be exempt from UK Taxes. We already live in the UK and we back in Australia to send over some personal items.
My criticism of the management in our situation is that when arranging the shipment from Australia, I enquired how much Duty / TAX I may be charged when arriving in the UK and Conroys were not able to provide this information. After an initial discussion where I was advised that as an Australian moving personal affects to the UK, I 'should' be exempt from taxes, when I later confirmed on the UK government website we were not exempt it was not possible to obtain an estimate of the extra fees.
I understand that I should have been better informed myself, but having not done this shipping before I was in the dark on the tax expenses involved coming back to the UK.
I would recommend that you develop a guideline warning statement for customers in my situation, when you are not exempt from taxes, to explain that shipping of standard household goods to the UK will be charged approx 25-35% in taxes of the total depreciated value.
I have been provided with the tax calculation spreadsheet from the UK side courier (based in Liverpool), so they can advise you how to calculate this and better inform your customers in future.
